After two quarter slants, the player will land on a platform where a spiked block will protrude through the wall. Taking the disintegrating platforms will lead to the higher section: The player will encounter a crushing vine, followed by a Flasher. The player can either take the red Spring, or try and time their run well to get past the crushing vine on the right. An ivy can be used to send the player upwards. After the next set of spikes is a disintegrating platform leading into the pit below, where another Shield monitor can be found. Around the slant, a Crawlton will emerge from the ceiling to attack the playable character. This lever will open a drawbridge blocking the tunnel. ![]() Spikes protect the next section: an area with a long spike pit at the bottom covered by some disintegrating platforms with a lever. The lower route has a hidden Shield monitor parked on the left. The player will firstly encounter some disintegrating platforms. The road splits into two paths, both of which end in the same tunnel before splitting up again. Mystic Cave Zone Act 2 also features black iron balls spinning around floating blocks. Once the player gets near, these platforms will slowly go outside of the walls, starting with the one on the bottom, forming some sort of staircase. Less commonly, the player will find sets of platforms with spikes inside the walls. Similar gimmicks also featured here are levers the player can hang on to to open up new paths, most of which are obligatory to use in order to continue. Usually, these gimmicks are placed so that the player can avoid falling into hazards, or to open up bridges and access new paths. Other recurring gimmicks are vines the player can hang onto to go down. Common elements for this Zone include moving floating platforms and large boxes that fly around to crush the player, usually in groups of two. Mystic Cave Zone is a slow-paced Zone that usually branches into various paths. By falling down a bottomless pit in Mystic Cave Zone in the 2013 remaster of the game, Sonic and Tails abandon Mystic Cave Zone and enter Hidden Palace Zone.After his vehicle is defeated, Robotnik flees, while Sonic and Tails continue onward to Oil Ocean Zone. By continuing their journey through Mystic Cave Zone, Sonic and Tails eventually locate Robotnik in the Egg Digger, which they have a battle against.From there, there are two different outcomes for the Zone: Mystic Cave Zone soon after became the sixth Zone that Sonic and Tails would travel through to put a stop to Robotnik's operations. The player has to also avoid touching the drill and motor parts of the vehicle and attack when Robotnik is not pointing them in the vertical position. After this, he will return into the ceiling and the process will start over, repeating the pattern again. He will then shift his drills in a horizontal position and attempt to ram into the playable character. ![]() After arriving, Robotnik will drill though the ceiling with his drills in a vertical position. When the rocks start falling down, the player must dodge the spiky ones as they can damage the player when touched. When the battle begins, the screen rumbles, round and spiky rocks fall from the ceiling and Robotnik himself arrives with his upgraded Eggman Mobile with two drills. The player encounters the boss vehicle on an empty hallway, where no one is seen. It is possible to skip this boss fight if the player goes to Hidden Palace Zone in Mystic Cave Zone Act 2. In the 2013 remaster of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Egg Digger is one of the two sixth bosses in the game, along with Brass Eggman. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy. In the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Egg Digger is fought with Sonic and/or Tails, while in Knuckles in Sonic 2 and the 2013 remaster of the game, it can also be fought with Knuckles. It is also the sixth boss of Boss Attack Zone in the 2013 remaster of the game. The Egg Digger is the boss of Mystic Cave Zone Act 2 in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, its various ports and remasters, and the lock-on game Knuckles in Sonic 2 and the sixth boss overall in these games.
